The Rock - Now Open

23/07/2010

One of Energetics’ star projects opened its doors to the public last week after almost ten years of planning.  The Rock, developed by Hammerson, is a £350m shopping, leisure and residential development in Bury.  More than 7,000 people packed into the retail and leisure complex for the grand opening on Friday 16th July.

Energetics designed and installed, and now owns and operates the 33kV primary substation which powers The Rock.  Energetics also laid more than 1.5km of 33kV cabling from the local Bury substation to The Rock and a further 2.4km of 6.6kV cable for distribution, along with 12 smaller distribution substations.

“Our design consists of two transformers, each designed to supply 11.5MVA in normal operating mode but this can be boosted to 23MVA when cooled, so either unit can support the whole of the centre’s maximum 14MVA power load and more,” explains David Thomson, Projects Manager at Energetics.

In addition, Energetics came up with an ultra-compact layout for the primary substation, and in contrast to traditional designs both transformers are enclosed side by side within a fire rated 20x20 metre room.

“Rather than occupying a significant amount of valuable land, our primary substation design fits in a smaller area and is located in the basement of the car park, rather than a traditional design which would occupy a significant area of prime land.  This has obvious commercial benefits for the developer,” says Thomson.

The 33kV primary substation at The Rock was one the first to be designed, installed and subsequently adopted by an Independent Distribution Network Operator (IDNO) in the UK.  The electrical installation at The Rock was energised in October 2009, shortly after Energetics energised the UK’s first IDNO primary substation at MediaCityUK in July 2009.

Joanne reaches for the top to raise £4,000 for local hospice

18/06/2010

A huge well done to Energetics' very own Joanne Kelly who recently conquered Mount Kilimanjaro and raised £4,100 for St Andrew's Hospice in the process. The 33-Year old based in our Hamilton office completed the 60km trek over five days in June raising a whopping £1,125 in donations from staff - a figure that was then matched by the company.

St Andrew's Hospice is Lanarkshire's only palliative care facility based in Airdrie.

Energetics wins battle for greater competition in electricity connections market

11/06/2010

Energetics continues to fight for fairer regulation of the gas and electricity markets.  The gas industry has been quick to embrace simpler and more competitive practices, whereas the electricity market continues to require intervention.  By challenging Ofgem, Energetics has already been successful in removing many of the restrictive practices that have endured since the regulator opened the market for independent ownership of networks back in 2004.

One of our first successes was the removal of capacity charges which Ofgem agreed were unfair for IDNOs like Energetics.  This was followed by the introduction of portfolio billing which allows IDNOs to be billed for multiple rather than individual networks, resulting in significant cost savings.

Our latest endeavour proved successful when, despite fierce opposition from the powerful monopolies, we were able to have the punitive and expensive electricity metering at residential sites abolished, removing another unnecessary layer of costs for independent companies.

“This is as much a moral victory as it is a commercial victory,” says Mark Cummings, Director of Energetics Electricity.  “The removal of this final obstacle will go a long way to providing the level playing field we have been fighting for over the past four years.  For the market as a whole, it means a greater degree of competition which in turn drives down prices.                 This should prove to be a significant incentive to developers who are clearly still feeling the impact of the recession.  It is good news for us, our customers and ultimately the consumer.”

This week, Utility Week published an article on the recent changes within the electricity connections market, featuring comments from Mark Cummings.

After a tough year for all, Energetics is pleased to announce that the company continued to grow despite the crippling effects of the recession.  Through expert management and hard work from the entire team, the company was able to maintain its unique business model and avoid any staff redundancies.  Five new employees have started working at the company since New Year and we fully expect this number to grow as our workload increases and we begin to move further into the Midlands.
