Smell Gas or carbon monoxide alarm activated? Act now.

Gas emergency

You must call the national Gas Emergency Freephone helpline on 0800 111 999 if you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm has started beeping.

If you do smell gas, it is worth checking the following before you call:

  • Are all the rings on your gas cooker turned off?
  • Is your gas oven turned off?
  • You cannot find the source of the gas smell.

If the answer is yes to any of these questions you should call 0800 111 999.

Upon calling the national emergency number, you will usually need to provide your details so that an engineer can be deployed to assess the situation and make safe any faults. If you feel you are an individual with special circumstances, please inform the call handler.

Actions you should immediately take to aid you if you do smell gas:

  • Open all doors and windows.
  • Do not use any electrical appliances.
  • Do not switch light on or off.
  • Ensure there are no naked flames that are alight.
  • Turn off the gas using the emergency control valve by the meter.
